Following
are the academic projects done by students :
Area
Planning Lab
Area planning lab has
been designed with an objective to orient students of
different disciplines towards the understanding of planning
principles. The main thrust was to appreciate the dynamics of
an urban area.
The urban components like Land-use, social and physical
infrastructure and natural resources were studied. Related
issues were identified and strategy-building exercise was
taken up to formulate urban plan for the next 20 years.

Rural
Planning Lab
An attempt was made
to familiarize students with planning in rural context. It
dealt with the study of village life, socio-economic
structure, institutional framework, and cultural
interrelationships with respect to physical settings. Villages
studied were from Sabarkantha, Banasknatha and Junagadh
districts of Gujarat. The lab provided valuable practical
experience and understanding about the life and living of
rural people.

Housing
Labs
The students had
hands on experience in two studios conducted in the source of
their study. The first studio focused on the ' Housing Need
Assessment' for Ahmedabad city. The objective of the study
was to assess the housing needs and demands for the next 20
years in Ahmedabad. Some areas where poor living conditions
prevailed were also studied and strategies to revitalize these
areas were evolved.
The 'Housing Layout and Design Lab' focused on learning
from the Latur experience and evolved design criteria for
Kutch earthquake rehabilitation program. The objectives of the
studio was to study and evaluate post earthquake performance
of relocated restructured and retrofitted villages of Latur
district and to arrive at guidelines and directives for
policies, physical development at various scales and
approaches technology for earthquake proof construction.

Environmental
Planning Labs
The first lab work
taken up was preparation of 'Urban Environmental Management
Plan' for industrial estates of Naroda and Odhav in
Ahmedabad. The lab work addressed issues concerning air and
water quality management, waste disposal, sustainable
development, along with their interrelationship with the
socio-economic conditions and the administrative structure of
the government. After analyzing the base line environmental
condition of the study area, the lab also proposed measures
for improvement of environmental status.
The second lab exercise dealt with 'Environmental Impact
Assessment' of port proposed at Umbergaon ( Vapi district,
Gujarat ). Pollution mitigative measures & environmental
resource protection measures were proposed after analyzing the
impact of the proposed project on the environment through
Leopold matrix methods.
Valuable practical experience was also gained by working for
the Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC), on environmental impact
assessment of debris accumulation and industrial damage due to
earthquake, on 26th Jan., 2001 in Kutch.
Students participated in a workshop on Cleaner Production and
Good House Keeping conducted by Gujarat Cleaner Production
Centre (GCPC).

Urban
and Regional Planning Labs
The first lab
exercise included understanding of various issues related to urban
administration, laws, legislation and planning process.
Case studies taken up were Junagadh, Mehsana, Vapi, Ankleshwar.
Proposal for the planning for the future growth areas as well
as existing problems was chalked out. The emphasis was upon
the social and economic planning for the next 10 years. The
strategic planning included the innovative policies for
improving not only the socio-economic situation of the city
but also the physical status of the city.
The second lab included the understanding of various
social, economical, geographical, environmental and
institutional aspects. Study area taken up was the
devastated Kutch Region (earthquake of 26th Jan 2001) with
serious development challenges. The exercise included damage
assessment of the earthquake affected areas, its
environmental, demographic and economic characteristics and
institutional engagements to address the reconstruction and
rehabilitation tasks of overall post earthquake regional
development. Proposals in the form of various policies and
strategies were evolved which emphasized upon the social and
economic planning for the next 20 years. The impacts of such
policies and other forces on the regional economy, local and
regional environment, and other sectoral issues were
considered for wholesome development of region.
