Academic Projects

Following are the academic projects done by students :

Area Planning Lab
Area planning lab has been designed with an objective to orient students of different disciplines towards the understanding of planning principles. The main thrust was to appreciate the dynamics of an urban area.
The urban components like Land-use, social and physical infrastructure and natural resources were studied. Related issues were identified and strategy-building exercise was taken up to formulate urban plan for the next 20 years.

 

Rural Planning Lab
An attempt was made to familiarize students with planning in rural context. It dealt with the study of village life, socio-economic structure, institutional framework, and cultural interrelationships with respect to physical settings. Villages studied were from Sabarkantha, Banasknatha and Junagadh districts of Gujarat. The lab provided valuable practical experience and understanding about the life and living of rural people.

 

Housing Labs
The students had hands on experience in two studios conducted in the source of their study. The first studio focused on the ' Housing Need Assessment' for Ahmedabad city. The objective of the study was to assess the housing needs and demands for the next 20 years in Ahmedabad. Some areas where poor living conditions prevailed were also studied and strategies to revitalize these areas were evolved.

The 'Housing Layout and Design Lab' focused on learning from the Latur experience and evolved design criteria for Kutch earthquake rehabilitation program. The objectives of the studio was to study and evaluate post earthquake performance of relocated restructured and retrofitted villages of Latur district and to arrive at guidelines and directives for policies, physical development at various scales and approaches technology for earthquake proof construction.

 

Environmental Planning Labs
The first lab work taken up was preparation of 'Urban Environmental Management Plan' for industrial estates of Naroda and Odhav in Ahmedabad. The lab work addressed issues concerning air and water quality management, waste disposal, sustainable development, along with their interrelationship with the socio-economic conditions and the administrative structure of the government. After analyzing the base line environmental condition of the study area, the lab also proposed measures for improvement of environmental status.
The second lab exercise dealt with 'Environmental Impact Assessment' of port proposed at Umbergaon ( Vapi district, Gujarat ). Pollution mitigative measures & environmental resource protection measures were proposed after analyzing the impact of the proposed project on the environment through Leopold matrix methods.
Valuable practical experience was also gained by working for the Gujarat Ecology Commission (GEC), on environmental impact assessment of debris accumulation and industrial damage due to earthquake, on 26th Jan., 2001 in Kutch.
Students participated in a workshop on Cleaner Production and Good House Keeping conducted by Gujarat Cleaner Production Centre (GCPC).


 

Urban and Regional Planning Labs
The first lab exercise included understanding of various issues related to urban administration, laws, legislation and planning process. Case studies taken up were Junagadh, Mehsana, Vapi, Ankleshwar.
Proposal for the planning for the future growth areas as well as existing problems was chalked out. The emphasis was upon the social and economic planning for the next 10 years. The strategic planning included the innovative policies for improving not only the socio-economic situation of the city but also the physical status of the city.
The second lab included the understanding of various social, economical, geographical, environmental and institutional aspects. Study area taken up was the devastated Kutch Region (earthquake of 26th Jan 2001) with serious development challenges. The exercise included damage assessment of the earthquake affected areas, its environmental, demographic and economic characteristics and institutional engagements to address the reconstruction and rehabilitation tasks of overall post earthquake regional development. Proposals in the form of various policies and strategies were evolved which emphasized upon the social and economic planning for the next 20 years. The impacts of such policies and other forces on the regional economy, local and regional environment, and other sectoral issues were considered for wholesome development of region.
